Innovative Nutrient Recovery Solutions: Stakeholder Dialogue in Île-de-France

On April 7, 2025, the Institut Paris Region hosted an event titled “Valoriser les nutriments excrétés par les Franciliens” at their premises in Saint-Denis, France. The session explored innovative methods for recovering and reusing nutrients from human excreta, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, to enhance agricultural practices and reduce environmental pollution.

The event opened with remarks from Christian Thibault, Director of the Urban and Rural Environment Department, followed by presentations from various experts. Discussions covered the potential of nutrient recovery to address chronic river pollution and dependency on fossil resources for agricultural fertilisers. The session specifically highlighted opportunities for implementing nutrient recycling systems in the Île-de-France region.

Event Details:
Date: April 7, 2025
Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Location: Institut Paris Region, 66-68 Rue Pleyel, Saint-Denis, France

One of the key speakers was Tanguy Fardet, a researcher at the Laboratoire Eau, Environnement, Systèmes Urbains (LEESU) of the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, part of the P2GreeN project consortium. His participation was particularly noteworthy as he represented the P2GreeN project, which focuses on implementing innovative nutrient recovery solutions utilising human sanitary waste from urban areas to convert it into fertilisers for agricultural production. Participants gained insights into how these practices can be implemented locally and contribute to global sustainability efforts.

The event emphasised dialogue between decision-makers and researchers, recognising that stakeholder engagement is essential to the success of nutrient recovery initiatives. By bringing together researchers, policymakers, and local authorities, it fostered collaboration and explored practical pathways for implementing these practices. Involving a diverse range of stakeholders ensured that multiple perspectives were considered, leading to more effective and sustainable solutions.

This engaging and informative session offered valuable perspectives for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.
