P2GreeN Participates in the ESPP Workshop on Nutrient Stewardship for the EU Common Agricultural Policy

We’re thrilled to share that P2GreeN participated in the highly anticipated ESPP (European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform) workshop on proposals for nutrient stewardship in the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) on January 21st – 22nd. Our partners from Argathaer represented P2GreeN, contributing to discussions on joint stakeholder proposals for the sustainable management of nutrients in the EU Circular Economy Act.

Workshop Agenda Highlights:

The workshop was 2 days of insightful discussions and presentations focused on sustainable nutrient use in EU farming systems. The agenda included a variety of key speakers and topics:

  • European Commission (DG AGRI): Overview of sustainable nutrient use within the CAP and future prospects beyond 2027, alongside the role of the CAP’s Farm Sustainability Tool for Nutrients (FaST).
  • Evaluating the CAP: Presentations on the CAP’s impact on soil management and environmental assessments, with case studies from Austria and Spain on nutrient sustainability.
  • Stakeholder Positions: Representatives from key organizations like the European Biogas Association, Copa-Cogeca, and the European Environmental Bureau shared their proposals for nutrient management in the CAP.
  • Regional and Research Initiatives: Insights into ongoing projects like NUTRI-KNOW, SEACURE, and CINURGI, focusing on nutrient management in different EU regions.

Key Contributions from Argathaer and P2GreeN

During the two-day workshop, our partners from Argathaer actively participated in thematic working groups on “Policy Objectives and Coordination” as well as “Fiscal Policies, Tariffs, and Border Adjustment Mechanisms.” They also presented P2GreeN’s proposals for the EU Circular Economy Act, focusing on measures to create market demand for secondary materials and establish a single market for waste, particularly critical raw materials.

Additionally, our team had the opportunity to showcase the core messages of P2GreeN’s nutrient proposals for the EU Circular Economy Act and the CAP. The key core messages include:

  1. Promote Circular Nutrient in EU Policies
  2. Support the Development of Safe Bio-based Fertilisers
  3. Incentivise the Transition to Sustainable Agriculture Practices
  4. Align EU Legal Frameworks to Enable Circular Solutions

A Strong Impact on Future Policy

Our participation in the workshop has already had a significant impact. The European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) has incorporated many of P2GreeN’s key proposals into the draft version of the joint stakeholder proposal, dated January 16, 2025. This document can be accessed via the ESPP website. (European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform – Regulatory Activities)

We’re excited that our contributions are helping shape the future of nutrient stewardship in the EU and look forward to continued collaboration with stakeholders in this important area.
